Ideals of Education

Sogang Unviersity was established by the Society of Jesus to provide an education based on
Catholic beliefs and inspired by the Jesuit philosophy of education, in conformity with the
Korean tradition of education.

Sogang Unviersity pursues the education of the whole person with love and faith,
respecting such values as the sense of human dignity and life, doing Justice and
seeking learning while sincerely desiring to find the truth.

Sogang’s Mission

Sogang University, founded in 1960, is a Jesuit Catholic university.
As such it strives to provide all its members spiritual help to find meaning and value in their lives.
Sogang forms persons who are integrated intellectually, emotionally, ethically and spiritually and
who thereby offer their service to change the world for the better.

Basing itself on Catholic humanism, Sogang University pursues the values of altruism, creativity
and excellence, developing leaders responding to the changing times.

Sogang education is centered on the students, with its education of the whole person based on concern and care for each person, leading to a
creative, integral response to the demands of the times. In order to enhance qualitative excellence in research Sogang supports the development of
its faculty and growth in their research capacity. Through education and research it leads its members to harbor a concern for the common good
and promotion of justice.

Being aware of the social responsibility of higher education Sogang University develops itself while sharing with vulnerable groups and it exercises
multiple functions of education such as supporting lifelong education. Sogang collaborates globally in seeking solutions to international issues such
as migration and environment and it develops educational quality along with other Jesuit institutes of higher learning, in particular in East Asia
and southeast Asia. Sogang contributes to building a world that is more human, fair, sustainable, and peaceful.

In order to fulfill this mission our students, faculty, administration, alumni, and Jesuits must all together seek a common vision and hold common
values. Our collaboration must be strengthened and promoted and our communication must be based on mutual respect and trust. In this way our
mission as a university for this age can be constantly renewed.
